Due to abundant food, and mild temperate climate, our area is a nourishing place for bears to thrive.  Black bears are a common sight on northern Vancouver Island.   While grizzly bears can and do swim to and from the BC mainland, there is believed to be no resident population of grizzly bears on Vancouver Island. The great news is, there are spectacular viewing opportunities to see wild grizzly Bears on the BC mainland, just a short trip by boat from Telegraph Cove & Port McNeill. Bear tours/lodges
